Excel Lesson 30 of 30: All Excel Functions

There are ten categories of functions in Excel. Here they are. All the 329 functions and what they do.

84 of these spreadsheet functions are available only when you activate the "Analysis ToolPak" add-in. To do so go to "Tools/Add-ins" and check the Analysis ToolPak. From then on, you have 40 Engineering functions, 6 more functions in the Date & Time category, 36 more in the Financial category and 2 more functions in the Information category. Unless you are an Engineer or a Financial Analyst these functions are not very useful. There is another problem with these functions: If you use them and send your worboook to somebody who hasn't activated the "Analysis Toolpack" they wont work on his computer.

There are 9 essential functions (AVERAGE, CONCATENATE, COUNT, IF, INDEX, ISERROR, MATCH, SUM, SUMPRODUCT) and 44 interesting others. The other functions are either specialized, rarely used or obsolete. For example, COUNTIF, SUMIF, LOOKUP, HLOOKUP and VLOOKUP become obsolete when you discover the more powerful yet easy to work with SUMPRODUCT and INDEX/MATCH.

The most powerful and useful function in Excel is SUMPRODUCT
